I wasn’t really aware how important progesterone is to a woman’s body, regardless of age, meaning pre- or post-menopausal.
Apparently, low progesterone levels lead to estrogen dominance, PMS, lowered libido, early onset of menopause, weight gain, and increased risk of endometrial cancer, just to name a few.
They make a synthetic, but bio-identical version of progesterone dubbed “progestin”. However, it does not provide the same protection against estrogen dominance. Progesterone balances estrogen levels.
“Estrogen dominance and progesterone deficiency is epidemic among women in industrialized countries.” (http://www.ultrapms.com/progesterone.html, 2005)
Estrogen “maintains the growth and function of the uterus so that the sex organs can become adult sized, and prepares the uterine lining to accept an egg. Additionally, estrogen affects skeletal growth, skin, fat and protein deposition, and electrolyte balance”. (http://www.energeticnutrition.com/vitalzym/estrogen_dominance.html, 2008)
Whoa! For me not really hearing a lot about progesterone, it certainly sounds important…Important enough for all women to know about!
