Black and Tan Coonhound
History and origin: initially developed in Medieval England, the perfect Black and Tan Coonhound was finally achieved in the southern United States. The Black & Tan Coonhound is one of the six breeds of Coonhound and was used to track bear, opossum, and raccoon. This breed of Coonhound is a working hound, and it is not usually seen in the show ring.
Description: The Black & Tan Coonhound stands at 23 to 27 inches at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere between 70 and 90 pounds. It is a large, powerful, and swift scent hound. Its shedding coat is short, dense, and needs constant cleaning with a hound glove. A periodic ear checkup is important if you own a coonhound.
About the breed: This is a very potent, bold, robust, and driven breed that is mainly a tracker breed & would not be suitable for use as a family pet. The Black and Tan Coonhound is not as easy to adapt to a family life as breeds such as the Beagle or Basset are. He is best suited for use by a hunter who can put his innate attributes to the best use.
The Black and Tan is fervent, cautious, and has a superb sense of smell and will be quickly misguided by any random scent it smells through the neighborhood. Similar to the Bloodhound and to a smaller degree, the Basset, this breed can be provoked to aggressive actions if it is required to conform when it doesn’t want to or when he doesn’t comprehend the orders he is expected to carry out.
This is an impulsive, and senseless type of aggression that comes with little, to no warning. The Black & Tan’s instinct to track is usually stronger than it’s proprietor’s capability to control; the dog goes into a driven, and uncontrollable state that is hard to break.
The Black and Tan Coonhound is generally very wary of strangers and is not suitable for family homes holding children because of his easily triggered aggression. Though bred to coexist with other tracking dogs, he can be very aggressive toward other dogs. The Black and Tan Coonhound is also very expressed, making him best suited to a life in a farm or in other rural areas.
He must have regular ear checkups because this breed of dog is susceptible to hip dysplasia and ear infections. His owner must train the Coonhound liberally from day one or run the risk of being bitten.
Feeding: Recommended food for the Black & Tan Coonhound is 1 ½ – 2 ½ cans (13.3oz) of meaty products with biscuits in equal part and a few cupfuls of dry food.
Ideal Home: A fenced home or a kennel is essential. This breed will be unable to make a good housedog because it doesn’t understand and won’t tolerate children. He will be much better off if owned and used by a hunter regularly.
He is a working hound that needs exercise everyday, and also strict supervision and firm leadership. Training in the areas of obedience, and socialization are necessary from day one.
