Accredited college degrees can help to advance your career and are in general worth more than non-accredited degrees. The education community set up certain standards that must be followed in order for a university or college to be considered a reputable learning institution. As a result, many jobs will not accept a degree from applicants that are not accredited college degrees. A degree that doesn’t have this accreditation is often not taken into consideration for showing qualification and certification for certain job positions. In fact, many people feel that anything but accredited college degrees is a waste of money and that the degree is not worth the paper that it is printed on.

With the advancement of technology and software development, virtually anyone with some computer skills can purchase a domain and then set up a virtual university. These virtual universities have the software to create virtual classrooms, online exams for students, message boards, forums and even virtual offices for the staff that will lead the virtual university. However, the standards that are required for accredited colleges are not met and the degree that you will receive will not have the accreditation to stand behind it.

Does this mean that you should avoid obtaining your higher education online? The answer is absolutely not. There are numerous accredited college degrees that you can earn through Internet Universities. The importance is to realize that you should only consider enrolling in the schools that have an accreditation to back their learning institution. This means that they followed the criteria that are necessary for the accreditation. The essential value of the degree will be as worthwhile from these universities as it is from traditional universities.

Many companies in the United States will pay for college related expenses and even tuition for college degrees. The companies feel that employees will benefit and as a result the company will benefit. Since they are paying for the higher education, companies need confirmation that the material that will be taught and the information that their employees will learn is valuable and accurate. As a result, they will only pay for accredited college degrees instead of degrees from just anywhere. This is true for both online and offline universities that students can obtain a college degree. Find out more at http://www.highereducationandyoungpeople.com

Accredited schools are listed on the Internet. You can find out if a school is accredited, whether online or offline, from the various college rankings list. You can take courses that are not from an accredited learning institution and obtain certificates of completion if you want to learn specific tasks, subjects and so forth. However, you will not be receiving a college degree. Some companies will accept certificates of completion for various subjects as part of your resume for certifications and qualifications for the openings that they have. Applicants that have the same certification from an accredited learning institution will more than likely have the advantage though because companies and human resource departments value the certifications from these learning institutions more than the other ones.

As the kids are back in school and summer vacation is over, now is a good time to sit down and review how to pay for the big “C”. Yes, college. The cost of sending a student to a 4-year college has been rising at a rate higher than inflation. What does that mean? It means it is time to start saving –now.

Currently, the University of Virginia, will cost an out of state student $27,750 in tuition. That number does not include room and board, at $7,435. If that seems to be a large number now, wait until your 1 year old enrolls.

According to The College Board’s “Trends in College Pricing” tuition has increased an average of 6.5% per year for the last 10 years.

At that rate. when you one year old turns 18, tuition could cost over $80,000 per year. Fortunately, there are some options to help you start saving now:

529 Plans. Each state has there own 529 plan. Most states will give you a state tax deduction if you use your own state’s plan. 529 plans come in two forms—prepaid tuition plans and college savings plans. Prepaid tuition plans allow you to buy future tuition at today’s prices. College savings plans, on the other hand, offer tax benefits and a variety of investment options. Earnings grow tax-deferred, and qualified withdrawals are tax-free. Nonqualified withdrawals are subject to income tax, as well as a 10% federal income tax penalty.

Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESAs, formerly known as Education IRAs). You can contribute $2,000 annually to an ESA, and funds may be used to pay for elementary and secondary education, in addition to college expenses. One major advantage of Coverdell ESAs is that if the funds are used to pay for qualified education expenses (e.g., room and board), earnings will not be taxed. Certain income limits may apply.

Series EE Savings Bonds. These types of savings bonds usually can be purchased and/or redeemed at your local bank. They are issued in denominations that are half of the bond’s face value ranging from $50 to $10,000. For example, a $50 bond would cost $25. Depending on your income tax bracket, EE savings bonds may offer state and local tax-deductible interest. When used for qualified education expenses, interest may be free of state and federal taxes, as well. However, they are generally subject to federal income tax and early redemption penalties may apply if the bond is redeemed in the first five years. Another possible advantage to savings bonds is that they may be purchased by anyone for your child, for any occasion.

Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA) and Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA). UGMA and UTMA accounts are custodial accounts. You may make unlimited contributions to such accounts, and the funds may be used for whatever purchases you deem appropriate. The UGMA account is particularly useful if you are considering purchasing stocks or mutual funds for your child to help save for education. More specifically, UGMA typically authorizes the transfers of cash, bank accounts, stocks, and mutual funds to minors without the need for an attorney; an UTMA account authorizes expanded transfers, including real estate, and royalties. For both UGMA and UTMA accounts, a portion of the earnings may be tax free or taxed at the child’s rate, generally a lower figure. You may make unlimited contributions to such accounts, and the funds may be used for whatever purchases you deem appropriate.

If you plan wisely, when your precious one year old enters college, you will be emotional for the right reasons.

College football is only a few weeks away and I’m having a hard time waiting for the opening kick-off! My enthusiasm for this time of year is twofold; I start thinking about river fishing and listening to the University of Alabama play football on Saturday afternoons.

For more years than I care to remember, I’ve spent a lot of my Saturday afternoons in autumn, on my boat anchored in the middle of the Tennessee River, just about a mile downstream from the Guntersville Dam where big catfish roam!

With my radio tuned to a station that carried broadcasts of the Crimson Tide and two rods baited with chicken liver, I would spend a leisurely afternoon fishing and cheering for the “Tide”. If I were out of range from a station that carried my team, I would tune to any SEC school that I could receive on my old battery powered radio.

Saturdays on the Tennessee River in autumn are usually warm and calm but without the stifling heat of summer. Usually only one or two of the turbines at the dam are churning the water to white foam, while making the current downstream gentle and peaceful. The old song, “Up a Lazy River” really applies to this 652 mile long ribbon of water. On peaceful weekends in the fall when the days are cooling down a little, big catfish that hide up and down the river in holes and caves near the banks, come out to find their afternoon snacks.

There have been many huge catfish caught on the Tennessee River. The largest I have ever seen weighed 105 pounds. There have been pictures of even larger catches up and down the river. The largest I’ve caught was 34 pounds and to me it was like trying to reel in a concrete block.

It really doesn’t matter how many or how large a fish I catch on the idyllic days of autumn. It’s just being there on the river away from everyone that makes those moments memorable, fish or no fish!

The third Saturday in October is always my favorite weekend to spend on the river. That’s the weekend that the University of Alabama and the University of Tennessee hold their annual football rivalry. When the game is being played in Knoxville, you may see boats headed there to the stadium on the banks of the Tennessee River. There are usually pennants flying, announcing the favorite team of the owners of the boats.

In October the leaves are changing colors up and down the river. Nature has arranged a palette with every color imaginable; free for viewing by anyone fortunate enough to be on the water at this time of year! I often see Bald Eagles gliding elegantly over the water looking for dinner and making the day for me just a little more tranquil.

The serenity of the river and its tree lined banks is often broken by a fish having the nerve to gobble up my bait. When that happens, I hurriedly drag him on board so I can get back to my leisurely afternoon. Other times the spell is broken by cheering coming from the radio. Someone just made a touchdown! If the team that scored is one of state universities, somewhere along the river you’ll hear a cheer coming from someone like me, taking advantage of a beautiful day.

Fall fishing is a balm for the soul. It’s a time to set aside everything that has to do with work and stress. Get out into the river with a boat and either drift or anchor. Then all you have to do is to listen to the leaves falling. Never mind the fish!

Heading off to college can be a nerve-racking experience, particularly when you start adding up all of the expenses you will be facing when you attend school.

Though college is going to be costly regardless of what you do, there are a few things you can do to help save yourself some money when heading off to pursue your dreams.

Take Advantage of Pre-Paid Meal Plans

With pre-paid meal plans, which are offered by most colleges to students staying on campus, you can actually get a pretty good deal when it comes to how much you will be paying per meal. Of course, you need to be on campus and at the student dining hall in order to take advantage of these free meals.

Try not to get caught up in socializing off campus so much that you miss out on the meals you have already paid for with the pre-paid meal plan.

Shop Smart when Purchasing Textbooks

College textbooks can be quite costly. In fact, the books you need for just one class can cost you hundreds of dollars if you buy your books from the campus bookstore.

Rather than shelling out unnecessary dollars, see about buying the used books the store will have to offer. You will need to get in early, however, because used books usually fly off of the shelf pretty quickly.

If the campus bookstore is out of used books, try looking online with bookstores such as Amazon.com. Another option is to ask around campus. More than likely, there is someone else on your campus that has already taken the class that will be more than happy to sell the book to you.

Another way to save money on textbooks is to purchase international books. Books sold in other countries usually have the same content as those bought in the states but cost much less in order to be appropriate for that country’s economy.

These books may be made of less quality paper and may contain only black and white print, but the savings can be quite substantial.

Bypass the Bookstore when Selling Old Textbooks

When you are done with your textbooks, you most likely won’t be using them again. Therefore, you can sell the books in order to recoup some of the money you spent to buy them in the first place. Many people take their textbooks back to the campus bookstore to resell them.

While this is convenient, you can actually make more money if you sell your books directly to someone without bothering with the bookstore. In fact, you can make more money while also providing that person with a better deal than what the bookstore has to offer.

Look Into Student Discounts and Freebies

In order to experience college to its fullest, you will likely want to be involved in a number of different activities. Many times, students can actually receive special discounts or can even get into certain events for free. Be sure to find out about free events and concerts that are offered nearby and take advantage of them in order to socialize and have fun.

Also, ask businesses whether or not they offer student discounts and take advantage of these offerings as well.

StudentsMetro provides York University Textbooks & Seneca College Textbooks

College grants, both government grants and privately funded grants from foundations and service organizations, are given away every day. Winning college grants can not only help students lower their debt burden, it can also put them in charge of choosing a college that’s right for them, rather than opting for the local community college because it is the least expensive option.

Most students finance their education through either college grants or loans or a combination of both financing options. The key difference is that loans have to be paid back, whereas grants are a free gift. Financial aid grants generally come in two options, need-based and merit-based.

Need-based grants are awarded solely on financial aid need. Formulas that determine financial resources and balance them against living expenses and college costs determine the final amount of the offered grant. Federal grants such as Pell Grants are an example of need-based grants.

Merit-based grants are awarded on the basis of student achievement. The criteria used to evaluate achievement ranges from not only scholastic achievement, but also to student talents and interests and community involvement.

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) is the federal government’s guide to all funding programs and is a logical place to start a search for federal grants.

Another great resource is The Foundation Directory. This is an annual reference source for information about private and community grant-making foundations. It provides basic descriptions for the nation’s largest foundations. The Foundation Grants Index is an annual source used to determine the current funding priorities of these foundations. You can obtain a free catalogue here or you can call 1-800-478-4661 to obtain this catalogue.

Local libraries and community service groups should be looked into as a source of grants for local residents and current high school graduates.

Online you can find subscription services that will help you locate grants that fit your preferences and career goals. You can fill out an online form, sign up for their email notifications, and you will be notified by email when grants that fit your criteria become available.

As a research assistant, she decided that a central site to use as a jumping off spot would be very useful. She doesn’t set herself up as an expert in financial planning or in guidance counseling. Her talents lie in research and data analysis. It is from this point of view that she has built this site. Here you will find a variety of resources to fit every situation. She has also added basic information on finding and applying for student financial aid and researching for grants, along with articles of interest on this subject.
